Is vinegar an effective sanitizing agent for home beer brewing?
Home brew books and stores recommend using chlorine or idodine to sanitize your brew kit, but has anyone tried using plain old vinegar? Obviously I wouldn’t be using a “raw” vinegar with live cultures, but couldn’t the good old white stuff work to kill unwanted contaminants? Seems like it would be easier on the enviroment and my wallet, too. Let me know if you’ve had any experience disinfecting with vinegar. Thanks.
No, it’s not an effective sanitizer. It doesn’t kill microorganisms because it’s not a strong enough acid. Commercial vinegar is actually less acidic than what is produced by an acetobacter contamination in your beer/wine/brew of your choice. If there is any present contamination, the vinegar would be as useful as water to just rinse out what’s there…it will not sanitize.
As mentioned before, bleach is tons more cost effective. Moreso, it actually sanitizes. The vinegar may be useful to dissolve any mineral deposits, and that’s if it’s allowed to soak for a while, but it will not kill any bad bugs.
I want to start home brewing, can anyone recomend books, sites, or tips?
I tried before a long time ago with a MR Beer kit and it was nasty.
Can you help with my home brewing questions?
I want to start brewing my own beer at home. I have no experience, but I did buy Home Brewing for dummies book, which I haven’t read yet. Where in the NW side of Chicago can I buy supplies/Home brewing kit? I saw a Mr. Beer kit online, is that a good buy? Any suggestions?
I am not in the USA, but after googling, I found this:
Brew & Grow – http://www.altgarden.com
1824 N Besly CT, Chicago – (773) 395-1500
Bev Art Brewer & Winemaker Supply – bevart.com
10033 S. Western Ave, Chicago – (773) 233-7579

I have been brewing for about a year. Go to http://www.beertown.org. Read Chalie Papazian’s book The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. This book will not only teach you how to make good beer at home, but will also inspire you. Also check out http://www.howtobrew.com. John Palmer simplifies the brewing process and his book is very informative. Check out your local homebrew club and shop to get more information. There are many podcasts available as well. http://www.basicbrewing.com has a great professional podcast and a great set of DVDs to walk you through the steps to making your own beer. http://www.brewcrazy.com is a whacky site. The first brewcrazy podcasts were very helpful in starting to homebrewing. The latest ones are more non-sensical ramblings of 4-5 guys partying drinking homebrew and recording it.
